Single Residential

Jury Comments

This private residence is a well considered answer to a specific brief and the constraints (and advantages) of a steeply sloping site looking out over the river.

The excellent site planning fits a substantial house on a modest lot without it appearing excessively developed and caters for the comfort of the elderly clients by placing all day-to-day functions on the one level.

Its restrained aesthetic was appreciated by the jury given the house’s visually competitive neighbourhood as was the reference to a jetty aesthetic of floating horizontal planes and limestone walls.

Project Description

The 564m2 strata titled site was purchased for its river aspect by a retired couple. The design concept was to design a contemporary building as a ‘viewing deck’ or ‘elevated jetty’ with a riverside or boatshed aesthetic.

The challenge was to blend traditional materials such as limestone, timber, terracotta, etc, in a stimulating way and incorporating these materials as the basis of the interior design.
